Luther Vandross Wins Four Image Awards

LOS ANGELES (NNPA) – Singer Luther Vandross won four NAACP Image Awards Saturday, including being selected best male artist. His “Dance With My Father” was selected the outstanding song, album and music video.

Vandross, who is recovering from a stroke, was unable to attend the ceremonies at Universal Amphitheatre. Alicia Keys was named best female artist.

“The Fighting Temptations” was selected the top motion picture. Cuba Gooding Jr. was selected outstanding actor for his role in “Radio” and Queen Latifah was named best actress in a motion picture (“Bringing Down the House”). Charles S. Dutton was picked as the outstanding actor for his role in “D.C. Sniper: 23 Days of Fear,” which also won top honors in the TV movie, mini-series or dramatic special category. Whoopi Goldberg won outstanding actress for “Good Fences.” Bernie Mac was voted best actor in a comedy series, “The Bernie Mac Show.” His show was also selected the best comedy series. Mo’ Nique won top actress honors in a comedy series.

Hip-hop group OutKast won for outstanding duo or group and Ruben Studdard was named outstanding new artist. Ramsey Lewis was selected best jazz artist and Donnie McClurkin was named the top gospel artist.

In other awards, Ray Charles was inducted into NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. The honor goes to an artist whose national and international influence has helped shaped the profession. The award was preceded by a tribute to Charles by B.B. King, Stevie Wonder and Bonnie Raitt.

Singer/actress Beyonce was selected Entertainer of the Year. Special awards were presented to Bishop T.D. Jakes and the Dave Matthews Band.
